Is Weed Legal in Prague for Tourists? Czech Law 2026

Is weed legal in Prague for tourists? It's complicated. Since 1 January 2026, Czech law lets adults over 21 possess a limited amount of cannabis for personal use and grow up to 3 plants (Czech Government report). There is still no legal way to buy it: selling, giving or otherwise supplying cannabis to someone else remains a crime.

The short version

  • Age 21+ only. Personal possession: up to 25 g outside your home and 100 g at home (Act 167/1998 §5(12)).
  • No legal sales. No shop, bar or person may legally sell you THC cannabis (Criminal Code §283a).
  • Going over the limits is an administrative offence, with fines of up to CZK 50,000. Much larger amounts are a crime (Government report).
  • Carry your passport. It's a legal requirement in Czechia (FCDO).
  • Any drugs in your system while driving can mean a fine, losing your licence, or prison.

Law vs. practice

The 2026 reform changed two laws:

  • Act 167/1998 (Addictive Substances Act). People over 21 don't need a permit to hold cannabis containing more than 1% THC for their own use: up to 100 g at home and 25 g outside. They may also grow, harvest and process up to 3 plants on property they own or have a legal right to (§5(12)–(13)).
  • Criminal Code. It added a dedicated cannabis supply offence (§283a) and rewrote the personal-use offences (§285). The government's own drug report summarises the reform as "partial legalisation of cannabis for persons over 21", with administrative fines raised to a maximum of CZK 50,000 (Government report).

The personal-use rule isn't limited to residents in the law text. But for visitors, the problem is getting cannabis: there's no legal supply, and whoever sells or hands it over commits a crime. Home growing only applies to property you own or have a legal right to use.

Border & airport rules

  • Don't bring cannabis into or out of Czechia. §283a lists importing, exporting and transporting cannabis among the offences. The FCDO also warns of severe penalties, including when transiting through the airport (FCDO).
  • Most neighbouring countries have different rules. Crossing a border with cannabis can be a serious offence.

Legal options

  • Low-THC "cannabis products": shops in Prague advertise products with trace amounts of THC allowed under Czech law (FCDO). Quality varies, and some may contain other psychoactive substances.
  • Medical cannabis: available within the Czech healthcare system. Not fully confirmed There is no clear official guidance on foreign prescriptions, so don't count on yours being accepted.

Culture & etiquette

Prague is used to visitors, but police do enforce public-order rules. Some city-centre bars and restaurants refuse stag groups, and drunk or offensive behaviour can mean a fine, arrest, or a paid night in a "sober-up" facility (FCDO). Don't smoke around children or in busy public places.

Scams to watch for

  • Fake plain-clothes police who ask to see your foreign currency and passport. Real Czech police don't have the right to do this. Don't show your money; offer to go to the nearest police station, or call 112 to check their identity (FCDO).
  • Street sellers. Supply is illegal, and the FCDO warns that street drugs are often dangerous counterfeits.
  • Drink spiking in bars and clubs.
  • Unofficial taxis that overcharge.

Harm reduction & if things go wrong

  • Emergencies: 112. Every Prague lamppost has a 6-digit code to help police find you (FCDO).
  • Don't drive: any alcohol or drugs in your system can mean a fine of up to CZK 50,000, losing your licence, or prison (FCDO).
  • If you're detained, ask for an interpreter and your embassy, and don't sign anything you don't understand.
  • Don't buy. Buying cannabis in Prague is illegal: there are no licensed sellers, so anything you're offered comes from an illegal source. Its strength and contents are unknown, and the FCDO warns that street drugs are often dangerous counterfeits (FCDO).
